Since the holidays we've been on a hype train of events in Pokémon GO. While the train was expected to stop at the station later today, it was announced yesterday that it won't be any time soon. The third consecutive event will focus around the Hoenn region. Here's what you need to know:
THE BASICS
The event starts at 1:00 PM PST today. That is the same time the Adventure Sync Hatchathon will end, and also the same time Heatran will leave Legendary Raid Battles. The Hoenn event will stretch until January 29, 2019, at 1:00 PM PST.
As for the effects of the event, expect Hoenn Pokémon everywhere. They'll have increased spawn rates in the wild, more presence in Raid Battles and Field Research, and some will hatch out of 7KM Eggs. Additionally, new avatar clothing inspired by the outfits of Teams Magma and Aqua will be added to the Style Shop.

BRELOOM
Shroomish and Breloom are getting some time in the spotlight. Evolving a Shroomish into Breloom during this event will allow your Breloom to learn the exclusive move Grass Knot. This move will make Breloom one of the best Grass-type attacker in the game currently.
SHINY POKEMON
Two new families of Shiny Pokémon will be added during this event. Those are the Zigzagoon and Taillow families. We may also have an additional new Shiny Pokémon coming, as we discuss below.
KYOGRE & GROUDON
After much pleading with Niantic on the part of the community, Kyogre and Groudon are returning. The Legendary mascots of the Hoenn region are coming back and replacing Heatran.
Kyogre has already had its Shiny variant released. As for Groudon, we don't know if it will have its Shiny form released or not. Niantic did not put anything about Shiny Groudon in their announcement, although The Pokémon Company seemed to hint at it with the quote below:

"Legendary Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region will have their chance to shine as well. Look for Kyogre and Groudon to make appearances in Raid Battles during the event."
It would make sense if Niantic chose to release Shiny Groudon now, since it wouldn't make much sense to have one returning Legendary Raid Boss that could be Shiny and one that could not. Just because it was not put in the announcement does not mean it cannot happen, but don't be disappointed if it doesn't happen.
