Trainers, Niantic has unveiled the details of May's Community Day! This follows Monday's incomplete, strange leak from the Japanese Pokémon GO team, but we now have more information and widespread confirmation.
THE DETAILS: The event will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2018. The featured Pokémon will be Charmander, although Charizard's exclusive move has not been revealed. The event will also feature triple Stardust for catching Pokémon and three-hour Lure Modules.
WHAT THIS MEANS: This Community Day is going to be huge! The highly-popular Shiny Charizard's release (although not confirmed, we are pretty confident that it will be released), plus a Stardust increase should draw out numbers on par with Dratini's Community Day.
EXCLUSIVE MOVE SPECULATION: While it hasn't been revealed, it seems most likely that Charizard's exclusive move will be Blast Burn. Blast Burn is a powerful move that is the Fire-type equivalent of Frenzy Plant. Calculations show that, should Blast Burn be this way in Pokémon GO, Charizard could drastically rise up in the ranking of Fire-type attackers.
While Blast Burn certainly seems like the most likely option as Charizard's exclusive move, there are other reasonable options. Flare Blitz, which is another powerful Fire-type attack, also seems likely. Do note that both Blast Burn and Flare Blitz are moves not coded into the game at this time. Alternatively, we could also see another move that seems related to Mega Evolution.
As we saw over the weekend, Ampharos' exclusive move was Dragon Pulse. Given the fact that Niantic did not give it an Electric-type attack, it seemed like it was, most likely, Niantic was prepping for Mega Ampharos in Generation 6 (Mega Ampharos gains the Dragon-typing).
So, if Niantic wants to go down that route again, there are some likely options for an exclusive move beyond Flare Blitz or Blast Burn. Charizard's first Mega Evolution, Mega Charizard X, exchanges the Flying-type for the Dragon-type. It would seem logical for Charizard to receive a Dragon-type attack to accommodate for that (do note that Dragon Claw is one of Charizard's possible moves at the moment).
On the other hand, Charizard's second Mega Evolution, Mega Charizard Y, is the same type as normal Charizard. It is known for setting up the sunlight in the mainstream games with its Drought Ability. With that in mind, Charizard could get the Grass-type Solar Beam as a special move. Although, a Solar Beam Charizard could only be used against Ground-types, as it is weak to Water-type attacks and very weak to Rock-type attacks, so it seems unlikely that Niantic would do this.
PATTERN DETECTED: With the global announcement of the Charmander Community Day next month, we now are beginning to detect a pattern with Niantic's selection of Community Day stars.
The first, third, and fifth Community Days center(ed) around a starter Pokémon (Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Charmander, respectively). All of these are odd-numbered Community Days. On the even-numbered Community Days, we've had a very rare Pokémon (Dratini for the second, and Mareep for the fourth). Should the pattern continue, we should see a Squirtle Community Day in July, and then Chikorita in September.
