Without question, Pokémon GO Community Day is one of the best additions to the game in its entire history. Once a month, everybody in the local area comes together to catch a specific Pokémon with a special move, do some Raids, and take advantage of some other bonuses. Kudos to whoever at Niantic or the Pokémon Company who thought of it.
But the events are not perfect. This article will go over the things that we and the community seem displeased over, and offer Niantic suggestions on how to improve them. Let's begin!
TIMEFRAME: Many people argue that Community "Day" isn't complete without lasting for 24 hours. But we disagree with them, and would rather have a three-hourlong event. While it is unfortunate that some people won't be able to make the short window, the event needs to be condensed. Without a short event, people would be less organized, and it would be more difficult to do organized Raids in rural communities if the event lasted all day.
SHINY RATES: This is an unpopular opinion, but something needs to be done about Shiny rates during Community Day. They are way too high. Shiny Pokémon are meant to be rare, and Community Day devalues them. The fact that individuals (even those in more rural areas) can walk away from the event with more than a couple of a just-released Shiny Pokémon is crazy!
It's not unprecedented to have a rate of getting Shiny Pokémon at a very high rate, as recently seen by the Ultra Warp Ride feature in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon and the Odd Egg in Pokémon Crystal. But there is more effort required to get those Shiny Pokémon than the ones from Community Day.
Now, Pokémon GO is not a skill-based game. (Some would even argue that Pokémon GO isn't even a game, but a social experience). But a Shiny caught on Community Day doesn't seem special to us, excluding the exclusive move. They are just too easy to come across. Finding a Shiny Makuhita or Swablu randomly in the wild has more value than a Shiny Dratini or Bulbasaur from Community Day. The Shiny rates still should be increased, but not as high as they are now.
EXCLUSIVE MOVE: The fact that we cannot use TMs to teach our old Pokémon their exclusive move is so annoying! We understand Niantic's decision from a business perspective, as it gets people out and playing during the event. But is also seems contradictory to the point of an exclusive move.
Niantic's been giving the featured Pokémon (excluding Pikachu) moves that will make it more relevant in the metagame. Frenzy Plant and Blast Burn made / will make Venusaur and Charizard shoot up the ranks; Dragon Pulse gave Ampharos a secondary use, and prepared it for its Mega Evolution; and Draco Meteor solidified Dragonite's place in the metagame.
But you may have already powered-up an Ampharos, Dragonite, Venusaur, or Charizard before their Community Day. Since we cannot give them their exclusive move, those old Pokémon (excluding Dragonite) are now just a waste of Candy and Stardust. Even if we could only change their moves with an "Event TM" that we had to pay for, it would be better than nothing.
Thanks for reading, Trainers! Remember, the next Pokémon GO Community Day is tomorrow (Saturday, May 19, 2018).
