Niantic has shared on Reddit that all Pokémon in Gyms will returned to Trainers once Gyms are deactivated. Niantic has also said they will publicize when Gyms are going down before the event so all Trainers can collect their PokéCoins and Stardust. Japanese and Italian blog posts have also said that Gyms will be disabled on June 16, although the Italian post has now been altered.
But more interestingly, GO Hub noticed something interesting in the promotional artwork for Pokémon GO Fest in Chicago. Underneath Charizard's claws is a picture of Heracross. Obviously, Heracross is the regional exclusive Pokémon for Latin America, a place far from Chicago, Illinois. It is possible that this is just one of the Pokémon Niantic chose to place in the promo. It is possible Heracross will spawn, as Niantic likely had a reason for putting it there. But Heracross is the less interesting feature GO Hub noticed. Above Heracross' horn is a black object highly resembling a form of Unown. This Unown appears to be an exclamation point, one of two forms that are not currently in Pokémon GO. (Question Mark Unown is the other). There is Unown C is also pictured in the artwork, making it more believable that this is Unown and not a lamppost or something. This supposed showing of Unown does not mean it is Unown ! or that this new form will be distributed to attendees. Honestly, Unown's iris is not in the artwork and it is half-concealed by a tree branch, so take this information with a grain of salt. Take a look at the promo artwork and GO Hub's zoomed-in version for yourself and decide.
Happy hunting, Trainers.
