Will Celebi Be any Good?

Niantic recently announced that attendees of Pokémon GO Fest 2018 will be able to conduct new Special Research. This caused many people to theorize that the Mythical Pokémon Celebi will debut at this event. (Should this happen, the Celebi research will, most likely, go global after the event). But is Celebi worth all of the hype it's getting?

TYPE: Let's start by looking at Celebi's typing. Celebi is a hybrid Grass-type and Psychic-type, just as Kantonian Exeggutor is. This means that Celebi is weak to Fire-, Flying-, Dark-, Ghost-, Ice-, and Poison-type attacks. It is four-times weak to Bug-type attacks.

That is quite a lot of weaknesses! Luckily for Celebi, the Flying-, Ghost-, Bug-, and Poison-types are not common in the metagame, and Celebi's Psychic-type attacks will cover the weakness to Poison-types. These weaknesses also haven't been a big issue for Exeggutor, unless it's defending a Gym (which Celebi cannot do).

STATS: Celebi has a respectable 210 Attack, 210 Defense, and 200 Stamina. This calculates out to a maximum CP of 3090. These stats may look familiar, as they are the same stats Mew has. In fact, many other Mythical Pokémon will share these stats as well.

MOVEPOOL: As we said above, Celebi cannot defend a Gym due to it being a Mythical Pokémon. This means that Celebi's only use will be as an attacker. No matter the stats and typing, Celebi's movepool will determine its viability.

Currently, Celebi has Charge Beam and Confusion as possible Fast Moves. It has Hyper Beam, Psychic, and Dazzling Gleam as possible Charged Moves. Do keep in mind that this is subject to change, just as Mew's movepool changed just before the research system went live.

We certainly hope a movepool shakeup happens for Celebi, too. Its biggest problem is the fact that Celebi has zero Grass-type attacks. Celebi's true potential, based on its and other Pokémon's stats, comes as a Grass-type attacker. But without a good Grass-type moveset (even just a Grass-type Charged Move), Celebi might be cast aside.

Celebi's Psychic-type potential is not nonexistent, but not promising either. Confusion and Psychic is not a bad moveset, but there are better options. This will allow Lugia with Future Sight and Mewtwo with its massive Attack stat to be more optimal. Celebi also gets access to the Fairy-type Dazzling Gleam, which could make it a decent Dragon-type counter.

Thanks for reading, Trainers!
