Generation 4 may be a while away, but this is worth speculating about. With Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl came a new evolution mechanic. This new mechanic is evolving near a certain stone, instead of holding an Evolution Item. Three new Pokémon evolve this way: Leafeon, Glaceon, and Probopass.
Probopass evolves from Nosepass once it reaches a certain level, but only if it's near the magnetic pull of Mount Corenet. Leafeon will evolve from an Eevee when leveled-up in proximity to a Moss Rock. Glaceon will also evolve from an Eevee, but it has to be near an Ice Rock instead.
You're probably wondering why PNN is even bringing this up, because Pokémon GO is all about Candy, right? No. First off, Evolution Items were introduced with Generation 2, giving us a break from only Candy. But it's Umbreon and Espeon's evolution mechanic (evolving a buddy Eevee after walking ten kilometers) that really makes it seem likely that these three Pokémon will be treated specially.
Niantic seems to be all about travel, obviously. They could scatter Moss Rocks and Ice Rocks in grassy and Arctic biomes, respectively. If one were to hit the "Evolve" button for Eevee within the pulsing radius below your avatar, the Eevee would automatically become either a Leafeon or Glaceon. Evolving a Nosepass in a mountain biome would function similarly.
Another option (one that wouldn't require a trip to Antarctica) is making the Moss and Ice Rocks function like Evolution Items. Niantic could also create a Magnetic Rock for Probopass.
Please keep in mind that this article is based on PNN's speculation. Niantic could very well do one of these options. But, they could also just not create a special mechanic for evolving to Leafeon, Probopass, and Glaceon.
