Smeargle and Delibird are the Ditto-like Pokémon of Generation 2. These Pokémon are the only non-Legendary / non-Mythical Pokémon that were not released with the rest of the Johto Pokémon in February. But we have entered September and are still awaiting these Pokémon, so were are they?
Smeargle and Delibird have unique moves (Sketch and Present, respectively) with unique effects. Sketch allows the user to permanently learn the move last used by the opponent. Present either explodes in the hands of the opponent or heals them. These moves, according to Niantic, are the reason that their release has been delayed. But after seven months, when will they be released?
Delibird is a penguin-like, Santa-like, present-giving Pokémon. Those adjectives are all related to winter and the holiday season, so we expect that Delibird will be released during the holiday events for the year. In fact, it seems reasonable that Delibird could be a season-exclusive Pokémon that only spawns in the winter months.
Smeargle is a barrett-wearing, painting Pokémon. Before the release of Generation 2, many people thought Smeargle would be an European-exclusive Pokémon. This idea is still valid, as will be explained in another article on Thursday. Stay tuned to PNN!
So those are our thoughts on when Delibird and Smeargle will be released. But does that mean they will hold up Generation 3? Many people think that because Ditto was released before Gen 2 that these two special Pokémon have to be released before Gen 3. But this is not the case. Remember, the first-generation Legendaries were released sometime after Gen 2 (some of which are still not released). So, clearly, Niantic will release these two Pokémon whenever they want to or feel they have to.
