TORTERRA'S IMPACT

The first wave of Sinnoh Pokémon has come to Pokémon GO at last! But now that we know what movepools each Pokémon has, we can more accurately gauge each Pokémon's viability. Lets start with Torterra.

TORTERRA'S  STATS

  • TYPE: Grass / Ground
  • STATS: Attack: 202, Defense: 188, Stamina: 216, Max CP: 2934
  • FAST MOVES: Bite, Razor Leaf
  • CHARGED MOVES: Earthquake, Stone Edge, Solar Beam

HOW'S  IT  SHAPE  UP?

Prior to Generation 4, the three best Grass-types were Venusaur, Sceptile, and (Alolan) Exeggutor. Torterra has slightly higher Attack than Venusaur, but its Attack stat is lower than Exeggutor's and Sceptile's. Torterra also doesn't have access to the best Grass-type move, Frenzy Plant. At least, it doesn't yet; It should once Turtwig has its inevitable Community Day in about a year or so.

And there are also some fellow Sinnoh Pokémon that are serious competitors to Torterra. We have Roserade, a glass cannon; Leafeon, a tank-y Eeveelution; And Tangrowth, the monstrous vine creature that has jumped straight to the top of the Grass-type charts.

With so many competitors, Torterra does fall behind Tangrowth, Roserade, and the others in terms of damage-per-second (DPS). On the plus side, it has good total-damage-output (TDO). High TDO makes for a good defender, and could make for a better attacker if we see a change in the battle system.

THE  VERDICT

The verdict is Torterra is worth powering up... but not quite yet. We recommend holding on to your high-IV Turtwig and Grotle for when Turtwig Community Day rolls around to give Torterra access to Frenzy Plant. Razor Leaf-Solar Beam Torterra can perform well (especially as a defender), but we don't recommend investing too much Trurtwig/Rare Candy or Stardust into one if you if can't afford it. Torterra won't drastically impact the meta until it receives Frenzy Plant.
Thanks for reading, Trainers!
