With the release of Ho-Oh, we now have all Legendary Pokémon from the first and second generations. This means that, from those generations, we are only missing Delibird, Smeargle, and Mythical Pokémon. While Smeargle is a bit of a wildcard, many people are speculating that we'll see Delibird for the holidays. So when will we see Mew and Celebi?
Mythical Pokémon are special Legendaries in the main-series. They play no part in the storyline, and are available by event only. Often, they are small, fairy-like Pokémon, although some (Deoxys and Volcanion, for example) are less fairy-like. But how will they carry over into Pokémon GO?
If Niantic wants to handle Mythical Pokémon in a similar way to the main-series, they could make use of the Promo Code feature. Now, that feature is not compatible with Apple's policy, so only Android-users would get access to them. If you thought the "Pokémon GO is unfair" debate was over, this would, without any doubt, reignite it. That is, of course, until Apple allows a Promo Code feature.
Something else they could do, something that is on both platforms, is use the QR code reader. This feature is how Trainers check into real-world events (like GO Fest, the Safari Zones, and GO Stadium). QR Codes could be given away at sponsored locations (Unibail Rodamco, Jio, Sprint, etc.). The sponsored PokéStop at that location could then be spun, and the code read.
From there, it's up to Niantic to decide how to handle it. The code could send us into a Raid Bonus Challenge screen with ten Premier Balls to catch the Mythical. Alternatively, it could send us into a normal capture screen, but the Mythical would have a higher chance of not being caught (due to the possibility of fleeing).
We, personally, like the regular catch sequence idea. It would allow use to use the combination of Golden Razz Berries and Ultra Balls. And, it would finally give Niantic a reason to implement the Master Ball! We really like this idea, although the code distribution may need to be a bit different.
For those who are unfamiliar with the distinctions between Legendary and Mythical, here are each of the Mythical Pokémon from each generation:
- GEN 1: Mew
- GEN 2: Celebi
- GEN 3: Jirachi, Deoxys
- GEN 4: Shaymin, Darkrai, Manaphy, Phione, Arceus
- GEN 5: Meloetta, Victini, Keldeo, Genesect
- GEN 6: Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion
- GEN 7: Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora
