1. The names and candy families for gen 3 pokemon found in the code!
The latest update of the game, which was released very covertly, contains a very exciting hint at a future update: the names of all the species and Candy families for Generation 3! No release date has been set for the new species yet, but it shouldn't be too long (definitely before the end of the year).
UPDATE-ROLLOUT PAUSE: The latest update also brought a very unfortunate latency issue when battling. Niantic has said that they are aware of this and have paused the rollout of version 0.71.0 until this can be fixed. Unfortunately for the Android players who got the update early, you'll just have to deal with this for a little while.
NEW INCUBATOR GRAPHICS: The Super Incubator that was leaked a short time ago now has graphical assets inside of version 0.71.0, along with new graphics for the regular and Infinite Incubators that are currently obtainable.

2. The war against spoofing: new security measures and warnings
Niantic has updated their server security this week. All third-party trackers (for example, RocketMap) have been affected. GO Hub reports that the affected parties are collectively working on a work-around.
Niantic also issued a great deal of bans and warnings to spoofers worldwide. Also from reports on Pokémon GO Hub, the recipients of this ban / warning were "random at best."

3. Niantic speaks about rural players' struggle
Niantic has finally addressed the concerns and issues of rural players in a new interview with GO Hub and other comments on social media. They have said that Operation Portal Recon (a part of Ingress, which also brings new PokéStops and Gyms to Pokémon GO) has brought some new Stops to rural areas, and the addition of PokéStops at Gyms has helped many rural players.
Niantic also said they are working for a way to better coordinate for Raids. They seem to still be in the development phase, and haven't officially announced anything beyond the search for a solution. Remember, social media (Facebook and Discord) are commonly used for coordination among many Trainers. Also, MYSTIC7 is developing a Raid coordination app that should be out within a few months (according to his projections).

4. PNN PROJECT: Gen 3 preview series
With the discovery of the beginnings of Generation 3, we'll be kicking off a brand new series soon! This series will feature an in-depth look at what we can expect for the new Pokémon. In true Niantic-style, we will be releasing more details on this series soon!
5. The time to get lugia, articuno, zapdos, & moltres is almost over!
Trainers, Lugia and the three Legendary Birds are almost gone! This Thursday (August 31) is the final day to battle and catch these four Legendary Pokémon. Niantic has announced no plans for the return of these four Legendaries, and it probably won't be anytime soon! Try your best to get a Raid group together and battle down some Birds!
We also can expect Mewtwo to be released after the Birds and Lugia leave (although Niantic has announced no official release date / time yet). Remember, this will be through Exclusive Raids, so you will need to have completed a Raid recently at a Gym where the Raid is taking place in order to get an invitation.
